Coaching Pathways > Communication

Good communication is important in every area of life. Often we think about communication as simply the sharing of information and ideas. At it's core, however, effective communication is about creating understanding rather than simply sharing information. To effectively communicate, we must realize that each of us perceives the world differently and use this truth as a guide to our communication with others. Too often, we believe that we have been clear in our communication when, in reality, we have fallen quite short.

Imagine how your everyday life would be transformed as a powerful communicator. Imagine yourself with the almost uncanny ability to know what to say and how to say it at the right time. For those tense or challenging situations, imagine yourself knowing how to remain calm while maintaining your focus on what needs to be understood, clarified, and communicated. How different would your day to day experiences be?
Improving communication starts by developing a deeper awareness of the various ways in which we send and receive information. Language, while incredibly powerful, is just one avenue by which ideas are communicated. Body language, silence, and emotion each powerfully broadcast vital information to us, but sadly, these facets of communication are often misunderstood or even overlooked. To become a better communicator, you must learn to improve your listening skills and your awareness of others (the receiving end of good communication) in addition to your written, oral, and non-verbal skills (the sending end of good communication).
